A visit to the modern art gallery in Salzburg by Munich architect Hoff Und Zwink Architekten. Quite a complex building with an entrance 100m below at the bottom of a cliff face that requires a lift ride up into the main foyer. The building reuses an existing building, places a white stone clad box externally and a polished concrete box internally on top of the cliff. The internal circulation spaces are lit with large roof lights naturally.
There is an exceptional view over Salzburg and cafe to exploit this opportunity.
The gallery spaces themselves are fairly typical – white walls, shadow gaps and artificial lights but the circulation spaces ameliorate the transition between them.
I missed on first look the complexity of the building solution and am glad I spent some time seeing the attention to detail and high quality concrete finish achieved. I would recommend a visit if passing through this beautiful city.
